Jackson, Mississippi was founded in 1821 at the location of a trading post. It is located on a bluff on the western bank of the Pearl River. It was originally called LeFleur's Bluff. It was named Jackson in honor of Major Andrew Jackson, who eventually became the seventh president of the United States. During the Civil War, the city was burned by troops under the command of General Sherman three times. Jackson became one the areas of major growth in the Sunbelt and now has a population of 184,000. Jackson has citizens who are dedicated to making it one of the most livable cities, and they are dedicated to producing enough energy for their needs. The USA International Ballet Competition is held at Jackson's beautiful municipal auditorium. The arts complex also has the tenth largest planetarium in the United States. The night life in the Jackson area is sparkling. There are enough ethnic and cultural groups to provide a wide variety of cuisine. One can choose Continental, Greek, Chinese, Italian, French, Japanese, Indian, Thai, Mexican, Russian, Arab, and good old Southern cuisine. There are fifty-five city parks in Jackson that offer playgrounds, golf, walking trails, tennis courts, swimming pools, and picnic areas.
